I'm a photographer who loves studying nature and wildlife, especially birds. I've lived in New York City all of my life. Perhaps because I have spent so much time in an urban environment, I have developed a passion for photographing in places like Central Park and the Jamaica Wildlife Refuge. My interest in natural settings has led me to specialize in landscape and nature photography. I love creating images found throughout the natural world. Now, in all fairness, I can't say that I devote my lens entirely to nature. I happen to also appreciate the urban landscape as well. You may find the occasional building or train amongst my photos. After all, you can't live in NYC without photographing the Number 7 Subway, can you? I do make a point to travel, as so many most photographers do, to capture images elsewhere.
I enjoy travel because it provides me with a sense of discovery. I guess I'm an explorer and an observer at heart. My wanderings have given me the opportunity to photograph in many locations. My favorites beyond NYC include Yellowstone National Park, Tuscany, Montana, Maine and Sedona. There are still many, many places I need to explore. I am not a full-time professional photographer -- I trek into mountains and marshes simply because I love it. Through the images on this website and the writings in my blog, I hope to share my vision of the world. And I hope you enjoy.
What's in my camera bag?
An artist's vision is the most important component of creating images. There are 3 main components to capturing stunning and memorable photos:
1. Superb Light. As outdoor photographer’s we write with superb light, the light that brings out textures and detail in images also giving them depth and dimension.
2. Interesting and Engaging Subject Matter. This is a pretty straight forward concept.
3. Dynamic Composition. This is where the artist comes in.
Superb Light and Interesting and Engaging Subject Matter are available to anyone who has a decent camera and is willing to pull themselves out of bed at 4AM or stay out past sunset when everyone else is home watching Two and a half Men reruns. So if you are in let’s say Yellowstone National Park at 6AM in front of a Bison you have Superb Light and Interesting and Engaging Subject Matter FIRE AWAY! As far as Dynamic Composition goes this is where the artist comes in. It’s a demonstration of a photographer’s ability to create and an outward arrangement of an inward vision. A photographer's eye is their most important tool and how the shot is composed, what is included or excluded the focal length used, depth of field and how the photographer wants you to see the subject matter is what makes a great shot. Good equipment does help of course! One of the most common questions I hear is, "What kind of camera do you have?" Well, I've used many different kinds of cameras and equipment over the last 10 years and I've made nice images with all of them. I've found that no single camera is best for every situation. Each has pros and cons, depending on the particular photographic situation. The equipment I choose to use is highly dependent on the what, where and how of making images. But people do ask, so here you go...

My primary camera(s) are the Nikon D3x and D3s high resolution Digital SLR(s). I'm very pleased with the versatility and feature set of these camera(s) and the image quality is simply outstanding. The D3x I use primarily for nature and landscapes while the fast shutter speeds and fps on the D3s is used for wildlife and capturing those tiny little birds that are so elusive…
